W a l k – i n – I n t e r v i e w to engage Research Fellows

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 07 Research Fellows viz. Research Personnel (01), Junior Research Fellows (04), Senior Research Fellow (01) and a Research Associate (01) through a Walk-in-Interview on Thursday, 4h June 2009. The details of the available position along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.
Project # 1: Assessment of Banj oak forests and their conservation status in Uttarakhand.
Position: (01 – Research Personnel)
Duration: One year.
Essential Qualification: Masters degree in Botany with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification: Research Experience in Vegetation Ecology / Mapping Forest Vegetation and knowledge on the Himalayan Flora.
Description of Work: The project aims to investigate the current status of Banj oak (Quercus leucotrichophora) forests in the state of Uttarakhand using remote sensing data and GIS techniques and field surveys so as to prioritize the areas for further conservation and management.
Project # 2: Monitoring Source Population of Tiger in Kanha Tiger Reserve (Phase IV).
Position: 02 : JRF-01 and SRF-01
Duration: Three years
Essential Qualification:
SRF: MSc in Wildlife Science/Life Science/Zoology/Botany/Forestry/Environ-mental Science or Veterinary Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University alongwith a minimum of two years of research experience in the field of wildlife.
Desirable Qualification: Research experience in wildlife specially carnivores, preferably tigers. M.Sc. dissertation on a relevant topic with experience in use of telemetry, GPS Telemetry, and satellite radio-collars. Exposure to techniques of camera trapping, distance sampling, mark-recapture population estimation, habitat use analysis, ability to work on GIS is desired.
JRF: MSc in Wildlife Science/Life Science/Zoology/Botany/Forestry/Environ-mental Science or Veterinary Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification: Research experience in wildlife specially carnivores. M.Sc. dissertation on a relevant topic with experience in use of telemetry. Description of Work: The research involves camera trapping, and distance sampling, to estimate and monitor tiger and prey populations in the Kanha Landscape. Modern technological tools like satellite and GPS telemetry will be used to study habitat use, ranging patterns, behaviour and dispersal of tigers.
Project # 3: Population Estimation and Ecology of the Tiger in the Sundarbans.
Position: (02 – JRFs)
Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification: MSc in Wildlife Science / Life Science / Zoology / Botany / Forestry / Environmental Science or Veterinary Science, with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification: Research experience in wildlife specially carnivores, preferably tigers. M.Sc. dissertation on a relevant topic with experience in use of telemetry. Exposure to techniques of camera trapping, distance sampling, mark-recapture population estimation, sign surveys, occupancy modeling, habitat use analysis, ability to work on GIS is desired.

The candidate should be able to stay on a boat for several days and know swimming.

Description of Work: The research involves estimating and monitoring the population of tigers and prey populations in the Sundarbans. Modern technological tools like satellite and GPS telemetry will be used to study habitat use, ranging patterns, behaviour and dispersal of tigers.
Project # 4: Ecology of lions with emphasis on the agro-pastoral landscape of Greater Gir Ecosystem.
Position: (01 – JRF)
Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification: MSc in Environmental Science/Wildlife Science or Forestry with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification: Research experience in mapping, remote sensing, and computer applications to wildlife Science. Habitat modeling and occupancy analysis skills are desirable.
Description of Work: The JRF is required to do high resolution mapping of Gir PA and its surrounding landscape for developing habitat suitability models for wildlife species.
Project # 5: Research Laboratory.
Position: (01 – RA)
Duration: Initially for a period of one year.
Essential Qualification: Ph.D degree in Zoology / Wildlife Sciences Environmental Sciences / Forestry / Experimental Biology / Biological Sciences and / or Life Sciences from a recognized University. Those who have published their work in peer reviewed journals and shown evidence of capability to do independent research work will have a preference.
Desirable Qualification: (1) Adequate experience from any reputed laboratory in using advance analytical techniques for plant, animal, soil and water samples.
(2) Experience in handling and maintenance of various laboratory analytical equipments (AAS, HPLC, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer etc.) and operational knowledge of various computer software(s).
Description of Work: The work involves field visits and laboratory analysis for plant, animal, soil and water samples and also teaching advanced analytical techniques.

GENERAL:

  • Candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) should be below 40 years of age as on 1st June 2009 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST. For the position of Project Personnel and Junior Research Fellow, the age shall not be more than 28 years and the age limit for Senior Research Fellow is 32 years as on 1st June 2009. Upper age limit for JRF & SRF may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women/physically handicapped categories.
  • Selected candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA-I) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month and selected candidate for the position of Project Personnel will be paid a consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month. The fellowship amount for the selected Senior Research Fellow and Junior Research Fellow(s) is Rs. 14,000/- and Rs, 12,000/- consolidated per month, respectively.
  • Selected candidates may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
  • Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project/cell.
  • The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Thursday, 4th June 2009 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration of candidates will begin by 09:30 A.M. onwards.

  • Two way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his / her place of stay/residence.
  • The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
