Applications are invited from Indian nationals who have qualified CSIR-UGC-DBT- NETJR For ICMR-JRF with the fellowship to work as JRF with Dr. Ravi Ram Kristipati, Scientist,Embryotoxicology Division, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow.
Project synopsis: In recent years, there has been increased awareness of the possible effects of environmentalcontaminants on male fertility with a trend towards decreased semen quality, affecting thequality of reproduction. Epidemiological studies suggest a correlation of male infertility withthe presence of chemicals or their metabolites in the seminal fluid in India and across theworld. The proteins present in the human seminal fluid are essential for the maintenance ofsperm function. Despite their importance, there is only modest information on mechanism(s)by which different chemicals affect semen quality. Drosophila provides a suitable model forsuch mechanistic studies and by employing various molecular, genetic and biochemicaltechniques, effects of different xenobiotics on certain classes of seminal fluid moleculesconserved at least at the structural level between Drosophila and mammals will beinvestigated. Development of this system will help to provide a new, rapid, and economicalDrosophila bioassay useful in the preliminary screening of chemicals for their potential toinduce reproductive toxicity.
